Desiré Hough (BA Vanderbilt University, Ground Floor Gallery) focuses on mixed media sculptural work that uncovers the unspoken communication between living beings and material objects, their assimilation into one, and the conflicts that arise from this intimate relationship.  Language inherently divides objects into categories, alienating one object from another, which clashes with the interdependent nature of the world.  Hough’s sculptures function as expressions of joint reality.  The work acknowledges that the inanimate and animate exhibit both a shared personality and physical existence when operating together.

Desiré Hough grew up in Saucon Valley, Pennsylvania observing her grandmother paint surreal versions of local architecture, enjoying creativity from a young age. She started formal art instruction with traditional black-and-white photography at Earlham College (Richmond, IN) and then continued studying studio art, focusing on painting and sculpture at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) where she received her BA in May of 2014. Post-education, she worked on mixed-media sculptures and collages at her studio at the Ground Floor Gallery in Nashville, TN, and exhibited work in nine different states across the country.   She has also worked professionally as a scenic fabricator, where she has built exhibits for museums and attraction. So far, Hough's work has been shown in nine different states across the country

Fun House: Art of the Surreal, Fantastic and Bizarre is a premier national exhibition. Fun House embraces visual art from individual works to installations and invites established and emerging artists to submit works that celebrate all that a Fun House offers: the marvelous, disorienting, fantastic, disquieting, and surreal.  Barrett’s Fun House is a site for discoveries and secrets; artists are invited to submit surprising (but not to me) works that engage with the real/unreal, the miniature and the gigantic, optics and illusion, and/or the politics of display.  Fun House will be installed in Barrett Art Center’s 1830s Greek Revival townhouse in all three floors of galleries and studios, multiple staircases, and in hidden closets and corners. The Barrett townhouse lends itself well to a dramatic, visually compelling presentation of contemporary and cutting-edge work. The show is visited by art appreciators and collectors from the Hudson Valley and beyond, including New York City and the suburbs of Connecticut.

Juror:  Patterson Simswill, who served as Director of the Montclair Art Museum from 2001 to 2008 and was Deputy Director for Research Support at The Museum of Modern Art from 1996 to 2001.

Exhibition 280 is a regional, juried exhibition, which has been presented in various versions at HMA since 1953, includes paintings, sculptures, textiles and video installations.  More than 430 submissions were received and from those, 69 works were selected for inclusion.

Desire’ Hough’s solo installation, Rotting Piñata, is a birthday party that was eagerly planned but never occurred for unspoken reasons, leaving the viewer with underlying notions of death. The piñata was never hit yet is falling apart, cake never cut but not at all appetizing, wrinkly balloons at your feet, and gifts left unopened create a subtly haunting scene.  The party becomes a memorial site that is left untouched in mourning.

Upon receiving his BFA in painting from Winthrop University in 2003, he moved north to Syracuse, NY where he attended Syracuse University and received his MFA in 2008. Frank has been the Director and Curator for Spark Contemporary Art Space in Syracuse, NY and is currently the Assistant Director and Chief Curator for the Sumter County Gallery of Art in Sumter, SC. As an artist he has been in numerous group exhibitions both nationally and internationally and has had solo exhibitions in South America, SC, CA, and NY.

Allison Lee Newsome, Ceramist and Educator, holds a M.F.A. in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and a B.F.A. in sculpture from Chico State University in Chico, California. She has also studied at Buckinghamshire College in England. A prolific artist, Ms. Newsome is represented by galleries in Boston, Philadelphia, and Ogai, Ohio. Her works are held in numerous museum collections including those of the Beatrice Wood Museum in Ojai, California, the RISD Museum in Providence, Rhode Island, and the Institute of Ceramic Art in Jingdezhen, China. She has lectured at colleges and universities throughout the United States including at the Art Institute of Chicago, Rhode Island School of Design, and Harvard University.

"The Artist’s Alphabet may be gallery’s best exhibit to date. Curated by Jodi Hays, the juried exhibition shows 10 mid-career artists that have established their own rules within their practice. In her curatorial statement, Hays references artist Charline Von Heyl: "I have an alphabet of tricks, an alphabet of colors." Hays, who is an accomplished painter in her own right, proves to be a capable curator with a great ability to choose works that relate to one another subliminally." Jodi Hayes explains, "In this juried exhibition I chose works from artists who seem to be following their own practice, with their own rules or "alphabet".
